Why sheen matters

Paint sheen is more than just appearance

The sheen you choose affects how your paint performs, how easy it is to clean, and how long it lasts. M.A. Smith Painting helps Sacramento homeowners and businesses select the right sheen for their specific needs and avoid costly mistakes. We did an estimate last month in Sun City Roseville where the homeowner wanted flat paint throughout the entire house, including the kitchen and bathrooms. When we explained why that might not be the best choice, she was surprised. She thought all interior paint was basically the same. She had two kids and a dog. Flat paint would have lasted about three weeks. The problem is that sheen isn't just about how the paint looks — it's about how it performs, how it cleans, and how long it lasts. Homeowners ask us constantly: What's the difference between flat, eggshell, and satin? Should I use different sheens in different rooms? Why does my painter care so much about sheen selection? Here's what we've learned after 15 years of painting interiors in Rocklin, Lincoln, and the surrounding areas. Flat paint has no shine. It hides imperfections beautifully because there's no light reflection to highlight bumps or texture issues. It's perfect for ceilings and for low-traffic rooms like formal living rooms or adult bedrooms. But it doesn't clean well. If you try to scrub a scuff mark off flat paint, you'll often just make it worse. Eggshell has a very subtle sheen — just enough to make it wipeable without looking glossy. This is what we recommend for most living spaces. Satin has a bit more sheen and is much more durable and cleanable. We use this in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and high-traffic areas. Anywhere that's going to get splattered, touched frequently, or need regular wiping down. Semi-gloss is for trim, doors, and sometimes cabinets. It's highly durable and very easy to clean, but it also shows every imperfection in the surface. The mistake we see homeowners make most often is choosing a sheen based on how it looks in the store or on a paint chip, without considering how it will perform in their home.

Aaron helped us pick satin for our kitchen. It's washable, looks professional, and doesn't show fingerprints like flat would have. Perfect choice for our lifestyle.

We did flat in our living room based on Aaron's recommendation for that warm, matte feel. The color depth is stunning, and it creates exactly the calm atmosphere we wanted.
