How long your paint job lasts depends on more than just paint
The timeline for a paint job isn't fixed. It depends on surface prep, paint quality, climate exposure, and maintenance. We'll break down what actually affects how long your investment holds up. This might be the most common question we get: "How long will this paint job last?" Honestly, if we had a dollar for every time someone asked us that in Rocklin, Citrus Heights, or Elk Grove, we'd have enough to repaint the whole neighborhood. The problem is that there's no single answer. It depends on the surface, the exposure, the quality of the paint, and most importantly, the quality of the prep work. For exteriors, 7-10 years is realistic for a quality job in our climate. If you're getting less than that, something went wrong — either the prep work was inadequate, the paint quality was poor, or there's a moisture issue that needs to be addressed. Interiors should last longer because they're not dealing with weather. A quality interior paint job should give you 10-15 years before it needs a refresh, assuming normal wear and tear. High-traffic areas like hallways, kitchens, and kids' rooms might need attention sooner. But here's the thing — those timelines assume proper surface prep, premium paint, and correct application. Cut corners on any of those, and the timeline shrinks dramatically. We see a lot of exterior paint jobs failing at the five-year mark, and it's almost always because the surface wasn't properly cleaned and primed before painting. For wood siding, proper caulking is critical. If water gets behind the paint, it will fail. For stucco, addressing cracks and texture issues before painting makes a huge difference in longevity. In Granite Bay and the hillier parts of our area, homes with southern or western exposure get hit harder by the sun. That UV exposure breaks down paint faster. For those homes, we often recommend premium paints with UV inhibitors. Our whole process is designed around making the paint job last as long as it should. That includes educating homeowners on what to expect long-term and how to maintain their paint job to maximize its lifespan.
