Cabinet painting done right takes time and skill
See what's involved in transforming your kitchen cabinets with professional preparation, priming, painting, and proper curing.
Why cabinet painting takes time and skill
Quality cabinet finishing isn't a quick job. Proper preparation, priming, painting, and curing each play a critical role in results that last. M.A. Smith Painting handles every step with the detail work most contractors skip, ensuring your cabinets look great and hold up to daily use. A homeowner called us last month asking if we could paint her kitchen cabinets over a weekend. She had family coming in two weeks and wanted the kitchen done before they arrived. We explained why that wasn't possible. She was not thrilled. Her cabinets turned out beautifully. The problem is that cabinet painting takes time, and rushing it results in a poor finish that won't hold up. Homeowners always ask: How long does cabinet painting take? Why does it take so long? Can't you just spray them and be done? What's taking so long if you're not even using the kitchen? Here's what actually goes into a professional cabinet painting project in Sacramento or the surrounding areas. Day one is removal. We remove all cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware. We label everything so it goes back in the right place. This takes half a day to a full day depending on the size of the kitchen. Days two and three are prep. We clean and degrease everything thoroughly. Kitchen cabinets accumulate cooking oil, grease, and grime that has to be completely removed or the paint won't adhere. Then we lightly sand every surface and fill any holes or dings. Day four is priming. We apply a bonding primer specifically designed for cabinets. This has to dry fully before we can paint. Depending on temperature and humidity, that's 12-24 hours. Days five and six are painting. We spray multiple thin coats of cabinet paint, letting each coat dry completely before applying the next. Day seven is cure time. The paint might feel dry to the touch, but it's not fully cured. Cabinet paint needs at least 24-48 hours before we can reassemble, and ideally 72 hours before you start using the cabinets normally. Day eight is reinstallation. We hang the doors, reinstall the drawers, attach the hardware. We make any final adjustments to ensure everything aligns properly. So a typical cabinet painting project takes 7-10 days from start to finish. If you're in a hurry and need it done in three days, you're not going to get quality work.
