Professional painter using spray equipment on exterior home with clean organized workspace

Quality equipment makes the difference

Professional-grade sprayers and tools deliver smoother finishes, better coverage, and results that last longer than DIY equipment ever could.

Equipment matters

Why your painter's tools determine your results

Most homeowners don't realize that professional-grade equipment delivers smoother finishes, faster application, and longer-lasting paint. M.A. Smith Painting invests in quality sprayers and tools so your walls look flawless. We showed up to give an estimate in Elk Grove a few weeks ago, and the homeowner asked what kind of sprayer we use. We told her, and she said "That's it? I thought you'd have something fancier." We resisted the urge to pull up the price tag. The problem is that most homeowners have no idea what equipment is standard versus what actually makes a difference in the final result. Homeowners ask: Does expensive equipment matter? Are you just upselling me on tools? What's the difference between a $200 sprayer and a $2,000 sprayer? Can't you just use brushes and rollers? Here's the truth. For most interior work, brushes and rollers are still the best tool. We use high-quality brushes — Purdy or Wooster — because they hold more paint, give better control, and leave a smoother finish than cheap brushes. For exteriors and cabinets, we use professional-grade airless sprayers. These aren't the $200 Home Depot units — those are fine for small projects, but they don't have the pressure, control, or consistency needed for professional work. We use Graco or Titan sprayers that cost several thousand dollars because they deliver a finer, more even finish with less overspray. The difference is in atomization. A good sprayer breaks the paint into finer particles, which means a smoother finish and better adhesion. A cheap sprayer produces larger droplets, which can lead to texture issues and uneven coverage. We also invest in high-quality masking materials. Blue tape isn't all the same — cheap tape bleeds, professional tape creates clean lines. Here's the thing homeowners need to understand. We don't buy expensive equipment to show off. We buy it because it helps us do better work, faster, with more consistent results. That benefits you because your paint job looks better and lasts longer.
