Why painting bids vary so much
A low estimate might mean corners cut. A high one could reflect quality materials, proper prep, and experienced labor. Here's what actually goes into a professional painting quote. We've been on both ends of this conversation. We've given estimates that made homeowners say "that seems like a lot," and we've competed against bids so low we genuinely couldn't figure out how the other painter planned to make money. (Spoiler: they weren't. Not legitimately, anyway.) The problem is that most homeowners don't know what goes into a painting estimate, so they can't tell the difference between a fair price and a lowball that's going to result in poor work. Homeowners always ask: Why does one painter charge $5,000 and another charge $12,000 for the same job? Are expensive painters just gouging? Can I trust a really cheap bid? What am I actually paying for? Here's what goes into our pricing, and what should go into any legitimate painter's pricing. First, labor. This is the biggest cost for most painting projects. We pay our crew fairly and carry workers' comp insurance. A painter who's drastically undercutting everyone else is probably paying their crew under the table or cutting corners somewhere. Second, materials. Premium paint costs more than cheap paint, but it lasts longer and looks better. A low bid might be using contractor-grade paint and skipping the primer entirely. Third, insurance and licensing. We're fully licensed and insured, which protects you if something goes wrong on your property. An unlicensed painter charging half our rate isn't carrying insurance, which means if they get hurt or damage your property, you could be liable. Fourth, overhead. We have trucks to maintain, equipment to replace, business insurance, and all the other expenses that come with running a legitimate business. Fifth, and most important — time. A quality paint job takes time. If a painter is bidding a job at half the cost of everyone else, they're planning to rush through it. We've repainted too many homes in Sacramento and surrounding communities where the homeowner went with the cheapest bid and ended up with a painter who disappeared the moment there was a problem.

We had our kitchen cabinets refinished instead of replacing them. The transformation was unreal, and it cost a fraction of new cabinetry. Very impressed.
